Canon Powershots. They have a night-mode so it lets you take very high quality pictures in the dark.

I have two compact cameras that manage this. One is the Canon PowerShot G11, great camera but a little on the large side if you need to keep it in a pocket. The other is the Sony WX1, much smaller but still a great camera even if it’s not so flexible. I would ad though that both these cameras are good in low light, if it’s very dark you would need a camera with some sort of Night vision such as Sony’s H20, though that is hardly a compact.

No camera can take a picture in the dark, and very, very few point and shoots can take decent photo in dim light.

It is difficult to find point and shoot camera that great picture in low light condition. Their flashes in only effective to about couple feet from the main subject.

If you have to stick with pocket size camera, you only option is a point and shoot. The best point and point camera with excellent image quality under low light is the Canon powershot SX200.

Even this isn’t adequate in low light condition with the flash on in such places as dark club or outside at night. But this is the best option on the market.

Try shooting the picture with a higher ISO setting and this help a little bit.

The Canon G11 is a good one if you really have to stay compact but a DSLR that is fairly compact and work excellent at higher ISOs is the Pentax K-x.

Below is camera review for the Pentax K-x (see first link).

Also the 2nd link below is to a discussion forum where a photographer posted some impressive images that were shot at higher ISOs.

Small and decent in low light with no flash is going to cost you. You need a large image sensor and those kinds of cameras aren’t common.

Sigma’s DP1 and 2 not the greatest in low light, but better than any compact. Panasonic’s GF1 is better and has a nice built in flash. The Olympus EP1 and 2 seem to have lower noise than the Panasonic at 1600 and 3200 ISO, but it has no built in flash, but you can buy one if you need it.

These cameras can run between 700-1000 dollars USA.

Your other option to save a few bucks is to get a entry level dSLR with a 50mm prime. You can pick up an entry level Sony Alpha, Nikon, or Canon for around 500. These cameras are large, but you might have to go this way.

There are no compacts, regardless of brand or price that are good low light shooters. They all have sensors that are too small with too many pixels, resulting in pixels that are too small and don’t gather very much light.

Probably the Canon Powershot G11 is the best pocket camera, with sensible resolution.

However the sensor is small. I would perhaps look for a micro fourthird camera such as the Olympus EP1 or 2 with a fixed 20mm lens. The size of the sensor will make a big difference.

If you can cope with the size then a budget DSLR such as a Canon 1000D would be even better.

The biggest compromise here is size. Cameras with bigger sensors, a pre-requisite for low light, tend to be bigger overall.
